Frequently asked questions
What to know before you order.
The keychain
What is My Self Key?
A personal-safety keychain, linked to your phone over Bluetooth. It brings together four protections:
- an SOS button: hold it for one second and, with a plan, your loved ones are warned;
- a sound alarm, to draw attention around you;
- an emergency QR tag: whoever finds you sees who to call;
- the Safe Cup, an accessory that covers your glass.
The free app is where you add your loved ones, set up your QR card and choose your plan.
How do I trigger an alert?
Hold the keychain button for one second, until the long red light, then let go. The keychain reaches your phone, which sends the alert to your loved ones according to your plan. A short press does nothing.
Can I try it without warning my loved ones?
Yes. In the app, "Test my key" checks in 30 seconds that the button responds and that the alert reaches your phone. Nobody is alerted.
Which colors are available?
Black or purple. You choose the color when you pre-order. For two keychains, in the same color or not, pre-order them one after the other: they go into the same cart.
Can I order only the QR tag?
No. The QR tag is a separate piece, with its own ring, that clips onto the same keyring. It comes with every keychain and is not sold on its own.
What is the bag of beads in the box?
Each box contains a bag of black, pearl and silver beads, the thread and a heart bead. The keychain strap does not come assembled: you string it yourself, the way you like, alone, with someone or as a family, in about ten minutes. Small parts: keep out of reach of children under three.
Alerts and the app
How far from my phone can I be?
About twenty metres in open space. A wall, a thick coat or a crowd will shorten that distance. Keep the keychain and the phone on you: in your pocket or your bag, you are within range.
Does the app need to be open for the button to work?
It needs to stay in the background: do not swipe it closed. The button then works with the phone locked and the screen off. The app needs location set to "Always" and notifications allowed (on Android, unrestricted battery). You also need your phone within range, switched on, with Bluetooth and a network connection, and an active plan.
What do my loved ones get when I trigger an alert?
It depends on your plan.
- On every plan, your connected loved ones, who have the app, get a priority notification with your live location. It rings even on silent or Do Not Disturb, if they have allowed it in the app. A phone that is off or offline does not ring. No monthly limit, up to 20 alerts a day.
- With Solo, Premium or Family, up to 5 loved ones also get a text naming you, with a link to your live location. The link opens in their browser, with no account or app. They also get an automatic call for the first 5 alerts of the month.
Texts and calls only go to French numbers (+33). Beyond 10 alerts in a month, no more texts or calls: the app offers to let you send the alert yourself. With no plan, no alert is sent.
How many loved ones can I register?
You add your loved ones in the app, in two lists:
- loved ones warned by text and call: up to 5, with Solo, Premium or Family;
- connected loved ones, who have the app: up to 5, on every plan.
On the QR card: 2 people with no plan, 5 with App or Solo, 10 with Premium or Family. The QR tag is not where you register your loved ones: it shows the ones you choose. Someone who is only on the QR card never gets an alert.
What happens if I have no network?
With no network, your phone cannot warn your loved ones. If it is your phone that is out of the key's range, the key keeps the alert for one minute and sends it as soon as the phone is back. After that, the alert is lost. The sound alarm needs no network at all. The QR tag does not depend on your phone: whoever finds you scans it with theirs, and they need a network connection.
Is the app available yet?
Not yet: it will be available on Google Play and the App Store, for Android and iPhone, by the time your keychain is delivered, and by 31 December 2026 at the latest. It is free. It is what you use to pair your key, add your loved ones, set up your QR card and choose your plan.
Isn't my phone enough?
To call for help with a phone, you have to take it out, unlock it and find the right screen, often with one hand and under stress. The keychain is already in your hand: hold the button for one second and, with a plan, your loved ones get your location without you having to do anything else.
Who is Selky?
Selky is our automated assistant, an artificial intelligence, not a person. On the site, it answers your questions about the keychain, the pre-order and the app. In the app, with Premium or Family, it points you to the right person for your situation: lawyer, psychologist, support group. It replaces neither the emergency services nor a professional.
Plans
Do I need a subscription?
Yes, to warn your loved ones. The keychain does not include a subscription. The plan is taken in the My Self Key app, through Google Play or the App Store, monthly with no commitment, or yearly.
With no plan, no alert is sent: pressing the button only opens the screen to call 112. Your key stays connected and your QR card still shows 2 loved ones. The sound alarm and the Safe Cup do not depend on any subscription.
During the pre-sale, you can also take a one-year plan here, with your keychain, at the special pre-sale price. It is paid once, with no automatic renewal, and you need one keychain per person covered. It is enough: nothing more to pay in the app. You get a code by email when you buy, and you activate it whenever you like, within 12 months of purchase; after that, the code is no longer valid. The year starts on the day of activation, not before: you lose nothing while you wait for your keychain.
How much do the plans cost?
- App: €3.99 a month or €39 a year. A priority notification to your connected loved ones, no texts or calls.
- Solo: €7.99 a month or €79 a year. A text to up to 5 loved ones, and a call for the first 5 alerts of the month.
- Premium: €11.99 a month or €119.99 a year. The Solo alerts, 10 people on the QR card and priority support.
- Family: €24.99 a month or €254.99 a year for 3 people, €31.99 or €324.99 for 4, €36.99 or €374.99 for 5.
Prices include VAT and are indicative. The price that applies is the one shown in the app and in Google Play or the App Store at the time of purchase. Plan terms at qr.myselfkey.fr/cgu.
Are self-defence classes included?
Yes, with Premium and Family: classes in person in Paris, and on video everywhere else, recorded by our instructors.
Ordering and delivery
How much is the keychain, and until when can I pre-order it?
€39.99 incl. VAT, paid once, when you order. The pre-order covers 1,500 units. It runs until Tuesday 10 November 2026 at 11:59 pm, or less if they are all gone before then.
When will I get my keychain?
By 31 December 2026 at the latest. We deliver to mainland France with Mondial Relay: €2.99 to a pickup point or a locker, €3.99 to your home, and free from €50, so from two keychains. Like any project at launch, production or logistics may face setbacks. If anything unexpected happens, we write to you straight away: you can then cancel and get a full refund, under the conditions of our terms of sale.
What is the €1 donated for? Can I give without buying?
For every keychain sold and not refunded, we give €1 to a charity fighting violence against women. The charity for this pre-sale will be chosen and announced at Christmas. During our Ulule campaign, we had already raised €1,000 for the charity M'endors pas, which fights drink spiking. You can also make a free donation, without buying, at the bottom of the keychain page: it goes to My Self Key, to fund our work on the ground (kits handed out, prevention workshops), not into the charity jar.
How many keychains can I order?
Up to five per order, in black or purple. From two keychains, delivery is free (from €50).
Safety, data and emergencies
Does My Self Key alert emergency services?
No, and this matters. My Self Key warns your loved ones, not emergency services, and nobody monitors the alerts. To send an alert or your location, it needs your phone charged, the app, a network connection and a plan. In danger, call 17 or 112, 3919 for violence against women in France, and text 114 if you cannot speak. The sound alarm depends on neither the network nor your phone, and the QR tag does not depend on your phone.
Does the QR tag show my medical information?
No, by choice. The QR card shows no health data: no blood type, no allergies, no medication. It shows your first name, a note you write yourself, a button to call 112, a button to text 114, and a button to call each of the loved ones you chose. Their numbers are not written. You choose what is visible. The tag itself holds no personal data, and a scan warns nobody.
Are my data and my location protected?
Nothing is sold or used for advertising. The app's data is hosted in Paris. Exchanges go through encrypted connections, and we protect data with technical and organisational measures. Your location is only sent during an alert or when you share a journey. It is then visible to the people who received the tracking link, and the link stays readable for at most 12 hours after tracking ends.
Who is behind My Self Key?
My Self Key was founded by Lea Bauchet, after a trauma that set everything in motion. The project was funded by an Ulule campaign that raised 28,000 euros from more than 500 backers, and over 700 people support it today.
